About the lecture
This lecture will explore rhizomatic mapping as an alternative to conventional hierarchical representations in design research. While traditional models like diagrams and charts rely on binary logic that limits multi-connectivity and ambiguity, rhizomatic mapping offers a non-linear, interconnected approach to data representation.
Based on Deleuze and Guattari's philosophy, rhizomatic mapping enables researchers to visualize relationships between diverse information gathered through observations, interviews, and experiments by creating complex webs of connections. This technique reveals nuances and encourages innovative thinking by highlighting unexpected relationships between elements.
The lecture will share experiences teaching this method to MA Industrial Design students who researched everyday objects and synchronised their findings on rhizomatic maps. This approach allowed students to expand their research horizons, follow their peers' progress, and offer insights to each other, ultimately fostering more creative and comprehensive design solutions.
